Understanding Breeding Types

Standard Breeding

The traditional method where the doe is taken to the buck's cage.

  • Natural environment for the buck
  • Less stressful for the buck
  • Standard practice for most rabbitries
  • Always take doe to buck, never reverse

Table Breeding

Controlled breeding on a neutral surface like a table.

  • Better control and observation
  • Easier to assist if needed
  • Good for inexperienced rabbits
  • Requires more handler involvement

Automatic Task Generation

When you record a breeding, BunnySync automatically creates these tasks:

Breeding Schedule Example (Bred: Jan 15)
Day 0 - Jan 15
Breeding Recorded
Day 14 - Jan 29
Palpation Check
Check if doe is pregnant
Day 28 - Feb 12
Add Nest Box
Prepare for kindling
Day 31 - Feb 15
Expected Kindling
Monitor closely
= Task Timing
  • Palpation: Day 14 - Feel for grape-sized lumps
  • Nest Box: Day 28 - Give doe time to prepare
  • Kindling: Days 31-32 - Most kindle on day 31
  • Check Nest: Day 33 - Count and remove any dead

Recording Breeding Outcomes

After palpation or if breeding fails, update the outcome:

Successful

Doe is pregnant

Failed

Breeding unsuccessful

If Breeding is Successful:

  • Doe status changes to "Pregnant" >0 Pregnant
  • Kindling tasks remain active
  • Due date is tracked in calendar
  • Breeding pair is linked to future litter

If Breeding Fails:

  • Doe returns to "Active" status
  • Future tasks are cancelled
  • Failure is recorded in statistics
  • You can immediately schedule a re-breeding

Best Practices for Recording

< Record Immediately

Enter breeding events right after they happen. This ensures accurate dates and automatic task scheduling.

< Add Notes

Document breeding behavior, number of fall-offs, time of day, and any unusual observations.

< Track Multiple Breedings

If you breed the pair multiple times in one day, note this. Some breeders do morning and evening breedings.

< Update Outcomes Promptly

Mark breeding success/failure after palpation to keep your records and statistics accurate.

Important Breeding Notes

 Critical Reminders
  • Always take the doe to the buck's cage, never the reverse
  • Watch for 2-3 successful matings (fall-offs)
  • Remove doe immediately after breeding
  • Never leave rabbits unattended during breeding
  • Check doe's vent area is not swollen or purple before breeding

Managing Your Breeding Schedule

Check Calendar Daily

Review upcoming breeding tasks and prepare accordingly

Plan Breeding Days

Schedule breedings for days when you can monitor does closely at kindling time

Coordinate Multiple Does

Breed multiple does on same day for synchronized kindling and fostering options

Track Seasonal Patterns

Note conception rates during different seasons to optimize scheduling

Common Issues & Solutions

  • Check if doe is already pregnant
  • Verify doe is in breeding condition (not molting, proper weight)
  • Try different time of day (early morning or evening)
  • Consider table breeding for better control
  • Check for vent disease or other health issues

  • Check buck's health and condition
  • Ensure proper temperature (heat reduces buck fertility)
  • Limit buck to 2-3 breedings per day
  • Provide 14-16 hours of light daily
  • Consider buck may be too young or too old

  • Ensure proper nutrition for both rabbits
  • Breed during cooler parts of the day
  • Check for adequate lighting (14-16 hours)
  • Verify rabbits are appropriate age and weight
  • Consider adding apple cider vinegar to water
  • Reduce stress in the rabbitry
